Li Zhenhua: Can you provide an introduction to your artwork?
Lulu Li: The idea behind the emo project is originated from a fantasy i had of my text msgs, some of them are not answered and left in vain, or gone missing, or perhaps were not communicated. I always wonder where they went, in my mind I imagined maybe they all felt into or stuck in the gap of a virtual space or somewhere. Sometimes i thought maybe they landed on top of old buildings, street corner, wasteland, or at the bank of the lake. I made these glowing text msgs light sculptures physically is to externalize this myth visually, then I used as way to metabolise it.
I choose the random places in urban spaces that has a quality of being abandoned, overlooked or ignored, or too banal to be appreciated, it’s the metaphor of that place where all the communications felt though and made impossible.
Li Zhenhua: Can you describe the issues of technique, methods and aesthetics that you deal with in your creations?
Lulu Li: It’s rather straight forward, the aesthetics is taken directly from text msgs and its glowing quality from the digital devices. the size of the installation is considered to be in proportion with the buildings or other urban context in the perspective of viewers, specially from far away, using this work i guess i am trying to point towards a place where the vital reality and analog reality merged together, these two have already merged in our own subjectivity in the hands of imagination, i just maybe take from more poetic or personal perspective to spell out the obvious. words are everywhere, the residue of this contemporary way of communication through mobile devices are everywhere, subjective speaking,we see what we want to see, or what we choose to see, to literally echo this virtual being in physical urban space is to reflect the dialectic nature of reality, in other words if i let u see you may have seen before (in your mind), what does this mirroring or feedback loop do to our perception of reality.
Li Zhenhua: In your opinion, what is contemporary art?
Lulu Li: whatever i am doing with the current time is contemporary enough.
Li Zhenhua: What should a good exhibition achieve?
Lulu Li: i feel the gesture of a good exhibition is rather invisible, it provide a coherent narrative through out entire show by negotiation between the voice of individual works and the over all tone of the entire show. it’s quite like a essay really.
Li Zhenhua: To what extent can you predict or plan for the encounter between your artwork and the beholder? Is it possible to imagine and take account of who they might be, how old they are, what gender roles they might adopt…?
Lulu Li: urban dwellers in general, whoever uses mobile phones. all walks of life.
Li Zhenhua: What do you want to tell the beholder?
Lulu Li: Stop thinking about it, just try to feel it.
